Zaragoza tell the NBA Aday Mara needs their papers. OKC say he doesn't
First reported by Heraldo de Aragón (Javier L. Velasco) · 16 OCT 04:00
Casademont Zaragoza say they still hold Aday Mara's international transfer, and they have written to the NBA, the Thunder, FIBA and the Spanish federation to say he needs it to play. Oklahoma City's answer, given through a spokesperson, is that the league told them no clearance from the Spanish club is required, and Mara is set to make his debut in San Antonio on Tuesday night.
- Mara signed a contract with Zaragoza in September 2020, aged 15, running to June 2027. Its buyout after his 18th birthday was €700,000, 20% of it for the player, so €560,000 for the club, El Periódico de Aragón reports.
- He left in 2023 without paying it and spent three NCAA seasons at UCLA and Michigan, where he won the 2026 title. Oklahoma City took him 12th in the June draft.
- The Thunder open the season at the Spurs on Tuesday, 20 October, at 20:30 in San Antonio, 01:30 UTC on Wednesday. Mara scored 13.4 points a game across five preseason games.
Zaragoza's statement on 16 October is short and firm. The club says it has received no request for the transfer, but "en caso de hacerlo, el Club se opondrá formalmente a la concesión del transfer, al tener el jugador contrato en vigor para la disputa de la temporada 2026/2027": if one arrives, it will formally oppose it, because the player is under contract for this season. Heraldo de Aragón, which broke the story, reports that the club first sent the warning in July and sent it again on 7 October after hearing nothing back.
The Thunder's reply, in a statement to News 9 in Oklahoma City, was one sentence: "Aday last played three years of NCAA college basketball and therefore, as advised by the NBA, no clearance from the Spanish team is required for him to play in the NBA." Mark Daigneault declined to comment on Saturday, Heraldo says, and Relevo's Antonio Cervera reports that whether Mara plays tonight is now the coach's call alone.
Behind the scenes, Zaragoza's general manager José Antonio Artigas told El Periódico de Aragón that the NBA sits under the FIBA rules on international transfers, while the NCAA does not. "Tenemos que defender un contrato firmado libremente entre ambas partes", he said: we have to defend a contract both sides signed freely. According to the paper, Mara sent the club a burofax on 11 April 2023, four days after he turned 18, calling the deal harmful to his development, and the club sued when he did not report for preseason. More than three years later there is no final ruling and no agreement; Artigas says Mara is the only player in the club's history whose exit was never settled.
There is a precedent with the same franchise. In 2020 Oklahoma City bought Vit Krejci's draft rights and paid Zaragoza for his release, El Periódico notes. The difference is the road: Krejci came straight from the Spanish club, and Mara arrives from Michigan. The club's own statement admits that FIBA rules do not require a transfer to play in the NCAA.
What happens next: the Thunder play the Spurs at 01:30 UTC on Wednesday and Denver at home on Thursday night. The court case in Spain runs on its own clock, and that is where Zaragoza can still win something.
Zaragoza lose the debut fight, not the money
We think Mara plays in San Antonio and nothing in the paperwork stops him: the league has already told Oklahoma City what it thinks, and the club's own statement concedes that the NCAA sits outside FIBA's transfer rules. The letter is leverage for a different fight, the €560,000 a Spanish court can still award, and on that the club's case looks stronger than its threat to the NBA. If FIBA or the league asks for the transfer before the Denver game, we have read this wrong, and we will update this page.

- Update, Tuesday 20 October: Mara made his NBA debut in Oklahoma City's 116-104 win in San Antonio, so nothing in the paperwork stopped him. Off the bench he played 12 minutes and had 7 points (3 of 4 from the field, 1 of 2 at the line), 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block, and the Thunder were +9 with him on the floor (ESPN box score). Victor Wembanyama went 1 of 13 from the field and finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks; Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32. We found no new statement from Casademont Zaragoza, FIBA or the NBA since 20 October. The Thunder host Denver on Thursday night (01:30 UTC on Friday).
