About NHL and how we cover it
The 2026-27 NHL season opened on 29 September and is the first with 84 games per team instead of 82, a record 1,344 regular-season games across 32 teams. Each club plays its division rivals four times, twice at home and twice away. The regular season ends on Saturday 10 April 2027. Sixteen teams reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs: the top three in each division plus two wild cards per conference, then four best-of-seven rounds. Carolina start the season as defending champions.
Two things move an NHL game more than the standings. The first is the goalie: who starts, his recent form and whether the backup gets the net on a busy night. The second is the schedule: the second game of a back-to-back, a long road trip or a late flight across time zones shows up in the third period. Special teams and the home crowd matter, but goaltending and rest are where most upsets begin.
