About Champions League and how we cover it
The 2026-27 Champions League is the third season of the league phase format. Thirty-six clubs play eight matches each, four at home and four away, against two opponents from each of the four pots. The league phase runs from 8 September 2026 to 27 January 2027, when all 18 final matches kick off at the same time. Places one to eight go straight to the round of 16, places nine to 24 play two-legged knockout play-offs in February, and 25 to 36 are out. The final is on Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.
Champions League nights sit between league weekends, and coaches choose where to spend their players. A side chasing a domestic title may rotate in Europe, while a club that needs points to stay in the top 24 will not. With eight different opponents, goal difference and the final simultaneous matchday shape the table, so motivation changes from week to week. In the knockout rounds, the first leg is often cautious and the second depends on the aggregate score and who plays at home.
