Fabregas says Italy played Kean injured for 90 minutes. Roma have the bigger problem
Moise Kean played 90 minutes for Italy in Paris with an injury, Cesc Fàbregas says, and a scan on Friday showed it. Como's coach used his press conference before Sunday's game with Roma to say the federation should talk to clubs better; within hours Italy's team doctor answered that clubs are kept updated “before, during and after” every camp.
- Fàbregas: Kean took “un colpo importante” against Belgium, then played another 90 minutes injured; he is out for “una settimana o dieci giorni” (Tuttosport).
- Italy's doctor Angelo De Carli, via ANSA: the medical staff “tiene costantemente aggiornati i medici dei Club”, including in the September-October window.
- Roma travel without goalkeeper Mile Svilar: Gasperini says a stress fracture will keep him out for at least a month, so Pierluigi Gollini plays at Como and is expected against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
The timeline is clear from the match data. Kean played the full game in Italy's 2-0 defeat by Belgium on 25 September, sat on the bench in Turkey on the 28th and started again in the 1-1 draw with France on 2 October. Two days later Roberto Mancini sent him home: “Moise is not in good shape, he has not recovered” (Football Italia). Reports differ on when the damage was done: Fàbregas points to Belgium, TMW describes a tibia problem picked up against France.
Fàbregas did not say Italy hid anything. His words were softer than some headlines: “la comunicazione tra Federazione e club dovrebbe migliorare” (communication between the federation and the club should improve). De Carli did not discuss the scan or the dates, only the principle that club doctors are in constant contact with Italy's staff.
For Como, the loss is smaller than the noise. Kean arrived from Fiorentina on deadline day for a reported €40m, but has one start in four games and no goal yet. Anastasios Douvikas has started five of six and scored against Udinese, Napoli and RB Leipzig, and TMW reports his new contract to 2030 is agreed.
Behind the scenes at Roma, the news is worse. Gasperini said the fracture in Svilar's fifth digit happened in training about a week ago, is not displaced and needs at least a month; the club is considering a screw, which would push his return past the next international break. Roma are second on 13 points from five games, Como have 10.
Roma lose more than Como
Our editorial team thinks the club-versus-country row is loud but the real story is in the other dressing room. Como lose a €40m striker who has not scored for them yet, and replace him with the one who has three goals; Roma lose a goalkeeper for a month, right before Real Madrid at the Olimpico on Wednesday. If Gollini keeps a clean sheet at Como and holds up on Wednesday, we will say Roma coped better than we expected.

- Update, Sunday 11 October: Como 0-0 Roma. Pierluigi Gollini kept the clean sheet we said would show whether Roma could cope without Svilar (DAZN: “Gollini insuperabile”). Roma played part of the game with ten men after Donyell Malen was sent off with a straight red for a foul on Kaiki; he apologised to his teammates and the fans on Instagram (Corriere dello Sport). Half of our test is passed; the other half is Real Madrid at the Olimpico on Wednesday.
