Luis Díaz had 49 goals and assists last season. In his last six games: none

By the Data Desk · ·

On Saturday in Augsburg, Luis Díaz finally scored with an overhead kick, ran off to celebrate, and then watched VAR take it away. It summed up his autumn: six games without a goal or an assist since the opening day, Bild counts, a season after 26 goals and 23 assists.

  • Díaz scored in Bayern's 5-1 opener against Stuttgart; since then, six games without a goal or assist (Bild).
  • Last season: 26 goals and 23 assists in 51 games as Bayern won the double. Michael Olise has 8 goals and 4 assists in 8 games this season.
  • Bayern play Viking in Stavanger tonight at 21:00 CEST, on artificial grass, without Manuel Neuer.
Why it mattersDíaz is the one Bayern star without a real backup, Bild writes, so whatever his form, he is likely to start tonight on a plastic pitch in Norway.

Bild's verdict is harsh: plenty of effort, but long spells where he drifts out of the game on the left and several missed chances that should have been goals. In Colombia the headlines went further, with El Tiempo picking up the word invisible from the German press.

Bayern's board is not joining in. Max Eberl told Bild he would have liked the Augsburg goal to count because it would have done Díaz good, and added: "Er kommt wieder" (he will come back), saying the movement is there and he is on the way up. Bild's own referee expert, Manuel Gräfe, argued that VAR should not have stepped in for the earlier offside.

The squad explains the patience. Ismael Saibari can play on the left but prefers the middle; Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl are planned for the centre or the right, especially with Jamal Musiala out with a torn muscle fibre. Bild also notes that Díaz started slowly a year ago, before his 49-goal-involvement season.

Tonight's game in Stavanger is on artificial grass, and Vincent Kompany has confirmed Neuer will not be in goal, with Jonas Urbig expected to start (ESPN). Kick-off is 21:00 CEST.

Our take

No panic: Bayern have no other left winger

Our editorial team does not see a crisis yet. Six games is a dry spell, not a decline, and the same Bild report that counts the misses also says he is getting into the chances, which is the part a winger controls. With Musiala out and no natural backup on the left, Kompany will keep picking him, and Bild notes he started slowly last autumn too before finishing on 49. If he is still blank by the November international break, the question becomes his place, and we will say it.

Updates

  1. Confirmed Drought over. Luis Díaz scored in the 71st minute in Stavanger on Tuesday, finishing a Konrad Laimer pass to put Bayern 3-2 up after they had been 2-0 down at half-time. It still finished 3-3: Herman Johan Haugen equalised in the 90th minute, and Michael Olise, sent off for two yellow cards in the 73rd, misses the home game with Arsenal on 21 October. Díaz's run without a goal or an assist stopped at six games (ESPN, beIN SPORTS).
