Carvajal to Getafe is official after a week on hold over LaLiga's salary limit
First reported by COPE (Tiempo de Juego), Ángel Torres
Getafe president Ángel Torres told DAZN on Tuesday that Dani Carvajal has passed his medical and that the only thing still missing is an agreement with LaLiga. The former Real Madrid captain, a free agent since 30 June, would join a Getafe side about to start its Conference League campaign.
- Carvajal, 34, has passed his Getafe medical; LaLiga still has to approve the registration under the club’s salary limit.
- He leaves Real Madrid with six Champions League titles and, according to COPE, turned down offers from MLS, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
- Getafe have scored four goals in seven LaLiga games and play their first Conference League league-phase match in Craiova this month.
Torres was stopped by DAZN cameras outside the club offices and confirmed the medical. AS reports that the last obstacle is money, not the calendar: Getafe must agree with LaLiga how much room they have under their salary limit to register a new player. Free agents can sign outside the transfer window, so the closed market is no problem.
According to AS, José Bordalás called Carvajal himself to explain the role he would have, including as a leader in the dressing room. Staying close to home counted too: Carvajal was born in Leganés, Getafe’s neighbour in the south of Madrid, and came through Real Madrid’s academy.
He has not played a competitive match since 23 May, when the Bernabéu said goodbye to him against Athletic Club. His last two seasons were shaped by the knee injury he suffered in October 2024, which kept him out until the Club World Cup semi-final in July 2025.
Getafe’s start explains why Bordalás wanted him. After seven league games they have two wins, two draws and three defeats, with four goals scored, and their next league trip is to Barcelona.
A leader for Europe, not a 40-game right-back
Our editorial team sees this as Getafe’s biggest signing in years, but for a narrower reason than the headlines suggest. Carvajal is 34, he came back from a serious knee injury and has not played a competitive game since May, so expect his minutes to be managed. Where he changes Getafe is the Conference League: a team that has scored four goals in seven league games gets a player who has won the Champions League six times. If he starts most of Getafe’s league games before Christmas, we were too cautious, and we will say so.

- Unconfirmed report Still open. Later on Tuesday evening, asked by reporters at the Coliseum, Ángel Torres walked back his DAZN comments. “No, no va a venir. ¿Por qué va a venir?”, he said, and when reminded that he had announced the medical himself: “Ya, pero de broma” (yes, but as a joke). He called the move “humo” (smoke) for now and ruled out a deal in the next few hours, while confirming he had spoken to Carvajal about his fitness and that LaLiga registration is “the first thing to see”. Until Getafe or the player confirm a contract, treat the signing as not done.
- Unconfirmed report Still open, now on hold until Monday. On Wednesday morning Ángel Torres went further: “No se activa nada. No tiene que ver nada LaLiga. En principio se ha caído” (nothing is being triggered, LaLiga has nothing to do with it, for now it has fallen through), adding that in football what is white today can be black tomorrow. AS reports that Getafe and Carvajal fully agree, but LaLiga's economic control values his salary well above what Getafe would pay, which breaks the club's squad cost limit; Mundo Deportivo adds that Getafe are already over that limit. Carvajal's agent returns to Spain on Monday 12 October, when talks with LaLiga resume. Until then, treat the move as stalled, not done.
- Unconfirmed report Editor’s note: we changed this story’s status from confirmed to unconfirmed and replaced the original headline, “Carvajal passes his Getafe medical: only LaLiga’s salary limit stands in the way”, because Getafe’s president has since called his own medical claim a joke and no contract has been registered. The original text above is unchanged.
- Unconfirmed report Still open, but closer. Before Getafe's game at Barcelona on Saturday, Ángel Torres told DAZN: “Está todo hablado y hecho y pendiente de que Dani diga esta semana” (everything is discussed and done, pending Dani's answer this week). He said a few loose ends remain, that he has given LaLiga “un aval personal, como siempre” (a personal guarantee, as always) to meet its rules, and “si Dani dice para adelante, pues para adelante” (if Dani says go, it's go). Getafe goalkeeper David Soria told Cadena SER's El Larguero: “Creo que se va a dar” (I think it will happen). Until Carvajal or the club announce a contract, the signing is not done (Cadena SER).
- Confirmed Confirmed by the club's president. Ángel Torres told MARCA on Monday that the agreement with Carvajal is closed and the paperwork has been handed in; Getafe lodged a guarantee with LaLiga to make room under their squad cost limit. Carvajal had passed his medical and signs until the end of the season, and Getafe plan to present him after Thursday's Conference League game against Universitatea Craiova. Fabrizio Romano reported the same on Monday: verbal agreement, medical done, waiting only for LaLiga's approval. The official announcement is still to come.
- Confirmed Official. Getafe announced on Tuesday 13 October that Daniel Carvajal is their new player, on a contract until 30 June 2027 ("Welcome to the Coliseum, Dani!"). A week after Ángel Torres called his own medical claim a joke, the deal is done. We have updated the headline; the original text above is unchanged (Getafe CF).
- Carvajal made his Getafe debut on Monday, as a starter in a 1-1 home draw with Rayo Vallecano. Álvaro García put Rayo ahead on 11 minutes, Djené Dakonam was sent off on 28, and Martín Satriano equalised for ten-man Getafe on 56; Carvajal was booked on 79 and replaced by Sebastián Boselli a minute later (ESPN). Our take said to expect his minutes to be managed; 80 minutes in his first competitive game since May is more than we expected.
