Bednarek applauds Porto's boos. Eight from eight in Portugal, zero in Europe

By the Data Desk ·

First reported by Record (Rui Sousa and Pedro Malacó) · 21 OCT 00:36

Porto have won all eight of their league games this season, and on Tuesday night some of their own Super Dragões whistled them off after a 1-0 home defeat by PSV. Jan Bednarek walked towards the stand and applauded them back, then told reporters, as quoted by Record: "Adorei" (I loved it).

  • Liga Portugal: 8 wins from 8, 24 points, 20 goals scored and 4 conceded, five points clear of Benfica (ESPN).
  • Champions League: 0-2 v Manchester City, 2-3 at Real Betis, 0-1 v PSV. No points, 33rd of 36, two goals scored and six conceded.
  • Porto have conceded in seven games in a row in all competitions. Next: Gil Vicente away on Saturday 24 October, 20:30 in Portugal.
Why it mattersPorto have the only perfect record in the Portuguese league, and with Slovan Bratislava they are one of two teams with no points after three Champions League games. The first test of how the dressing room takes Tuesday comes in Barcelos in three days.

Record describes the scene at the Dragão: Bednarek led the group of players towards the Super Dragões stand, applauded, pointed at his shirt and made his displeasure plain, and Jakub Kiwior did the same. Francesco Farioli applauded towards the stands. In the mixed zone the Polish defender explained himself: "Adorei porque mostra a paixão que existe da nossa parte, do clube e das pessoas" (I loved it because it shows the passion there is on our side, in the club and among the people). He added: "Não é o fim do mundo" (It is not the end of the world).

The game itself was decided by one goal: Guus Til scored just before the hour, and 48,935 fans saw Porto take 14 shots with four on target against PSV's 18 and three (ESPN). Farioli said it was the game, in his 64 in charge, in which his team found it hardest to press, "especialmente na primeira parte" (especially in the first half), according to Record. Then came the line that sums up his autumn: "é a terceira vez que venho aqui na Champions dizer que fizemos suficiente para ter um resultado diferente" (it is the third time I come here in the Champions League to say we did enough for a different result).

He also pushed back on the word crisis. "É interessante falar-se de crise com uma equipa que está em primeiro lugar" (it is interesting to talk about a crisis with a team in first place), he said, as reported by Superportistas, and pointed out that Porto have faced "duas equipas do pote 1 e uma do pote 2" (two pot 1 teams and one from pot 2). The defensive run is real, though: after four league clean sheets to open the season, Porto have conceded in every game since 4 September, the 2-1 against Moreirense (ESPN results).

What happens next: Bednarek's answer to the Champions League question was "Agora o jogo mais importante é o do Gil Vicente" (now the most important game is Gil Vicente). Gil Vicente are seventh with 14 points and have just won 2-1 at Braga. In Europe, Napoli visit the Dragão on 4 November, with Feyenoord and Liverpool away after that and five games left in all.

Our take

Porto lose Europe in both boxes, not the stands

We think the boos and Bednarek's applause are a sideshow. The gap is in the boxes: 20 goals in 8 league games against 2 in 3 in Europe, and six conceded in those three, more than Porto have let in across the whole league season. With 15 points left to play for, we think Porto need a clean sheet against Napoli on 4 November to keep the play-off places in reach. If they keep one in Barcelos on Saturday first, the seven-game run ends and Farioli's "no crisis" line starts to look right.
