Bayern's 6-1 hid it: Olise banned, Musiala out, Neuer a doubt for Arsenal

By the Data Desk ·

Michael Olise scored one and set up another as Bayern beat RB Leipzig 6-1 on Saturday, and he cannot play on Wednesday against Arsenal. He is suspended after his second yellow card in Stavanger, Max Eberl does not think Jamal Musiala will be ready, and Manuel Neuer is a doubt with what Eberl called a bit of fluid in the foot.

  • Olise was sent off for a second yellow in the 73rd minute of the 3-3 at Viking on 13 October and serves his ban against Arsenal (ESPN, Kimmich to Sky).
  • He has 5 goals and 2 assists in 6 Bundesliga games and 2 goals and 1 assist in the Champions League; by ESPN's match data he had a hand in 13 of Bayern's 36 competitive goals this season.
  • After two games Arsenal have 6 points and a 4-0 goal record in the Champions League; Bayern have 4 points, scored 8 and conceded 3.
Why it mattersWednesday's game in Munich is the biggest of the league phase so far, and Bayern go into it without their most productive winger. The 6-1 was a good evening, but it did not answer who replaces him.

Eberl stood in for Vincent Kompany in front of the media after the game and gave the first detail on Neuer: "Es ist nichts Schlimmes, es ist einfach ein bisschen Flüssigkeit im Fuß gewesen" (it is nothing serious, just a bit of fluid in the foot), adding "jetzt schauen wir mal, ob es bis Mittwoch reicht" (now we will see if it is enough by Wednesday). Neuer missed the last training session before Stavanger and has trained only in part since, dpa reports, and Jonas Urbig kept goal in both games. On Musiala, out since tearing a muscle fibre in his right thigh in the warm-up for Germany's Nations League opener in September, Eberl said: "Ich glaube, gegen Arsenal wird es nicht reichen", but "im Oktober kommt er noch zurück". On Kompany and Wednesday, Eberl said: "Er wird dabei sein."

The Olise absence is the one Bayern cannot plan around. Joshua Kimmich told Sky that "Michael fällt aufgrund seiner roten Karte aus" and that this makes things "etwas schwieriger" for the team, while Harry Kane said: "Natürlich werden wir einen unserer Spieler vermissen." FCBinside names Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl as the options on the right. Against Leipzig, Olise hit the 3-0 from outside the box and set up Díaz for the 6-0.

Kimmich called Luis Díaz "der Mann des Abends" after a hat-trick and an assist, four days after his goal in Stavanger ended a six-game run without a goal or an assist. Bayern are top of the Bundesliga on 14 points, level with Dortmund but with a 22-5 goal record. At home this season they have won all four competitive games with 23 goals for and 2 against.

Away from Munich the picture is different: 2-2 at Augsburg and 3-3 at Viking, five goals conceded in two games, and in Stavanger they let a 3-2 lead slip in the 90th minute. Arsenal have not conceded in the Champions League, winning 1-0 at Napoli and 3-0 against Lille, and they won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. What happens next: Bayern v Arsenal kicks off at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 21 October, at 21:00 CEST (19:00 UTC), and Bayern will decide on Neuer before then.

Our take

Without Olise, Arsenal arrive as the better side

Our editorial team thinks Arsenal start Wednesday as the stronger team, and the 6-1 does not change that. Olise had a hand in 13 of Bayern's 36 goals this season, Bayern conceded five in their last two games outside Munich, and Arsenal have yet to concede in this competition. Home form is Bayern's best argument, but Union, Bodø/Glimt and Leipzig are not Arsenal, and a defeat would leave them five points behind after three games. If Bayern keep Arsenal off the scoresheet without Olise, the leaks were an away-day problem and not the squad, and we will say so here.

Updates

  1. Neuer trained with the team again on Monday, Sky Sport Germany reports, but no final decision has been taken: whether he plays against Arsenal on Wednesday (19:00 UTC) after his foot problem will be decided at short notice, and if he is not ready, Jonas Urbig stays in goal ("Eine endgültige Entscheidung ist allerdings noch nicht gefallen").
