Ronaldo walks out of Portugal’s camp: what it means against Norway

By the Data Desk ·

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s Nations League camp after starting on the bench in the win in Oslo and being told he would not start against Denmark. Jorge Jesus says he will explain the decision after the international break.

Ronaldo announced his exit in a post on Instagram, amid reports of tension with the head coach that had been building since the 2:1 win over Norway.

Jesus has already moved Gonçalo Ramos into the central striker role. Portugal beat Denmark 4:2 without their captain and have taken 9 points from 9 in the group.

Norway, beaten 2:1 at home in the first meeting, travel to Portugal on Sunday with 3 points from 9.

Our take

Portugal’s attack no longer runs through Ronaldo

The numbers say Portugal score without him: four against Denmark, two in Oslo with Ramos up front. His absence does not change the favourite. What we can’t rule out is a draw against a Norway side that has scored in every group game, so we cover it with double chance inside today’s double.
